Are you looking for SEO advice for 2017? The quote above from Tereza Litsa’s Search Engine Watch article is one of my favorite tips I’ve seen so far in the new year.

We’ve had clients come to us looking for the “quick SEO fix” that doesn’t require too much time and wouldn’t require any content changes. That’s a tall order. If your content isn’t engaging people now, Google isn’t going to find it more appealing if you aren’t willing to make any efforts to change it.

That’s not to say there aren’t some technical fixes and on-page optimization that can be done. Maybe you’ve accidentally set the site to noindex or goofed something else up somehow. Your content may be stellar, but there is just some little tweaks that need to be made. Awesome if that’s the case! But, don’t hold your breath.

Just remember, though, there aren’t usually quick fixes or technical magic to make your site rise to page one without some work on your content.

Additional SEO Advice for 2017

Make your site’s user experience great. Google’s algorithm takes dwell time and other engagement factors into account. Create a site where people want to spend a little time.

Think mobile first. Sure, this was the big thing last year, but it’s more important now than ever. If your mobile experience is terrible, your site won’t get Google love.

Remember that SEO isn’t a quick fix project but an on-going endeavor.

  1. If you aren’t prepared to create good content routinely (not daily — routinely) . . .
  2. If you aren’t ready to build relationships (instead of just building links) . . .
  3. If you don’t have the budget to hire a resource to do it for you . . .

. . . don’t throw money away on the get-ranked-quick schemes. It will hurt you in the long run.

The best SEO advice for 2017 is to treat SEO and content marketing as intertwined, ongoing efforts. It’s not rocket science, but you can get a lot more done if you have the right people on board to help you get the most out of your efforts.
